About Joseph Mullen

Joseph Mullen, California Strength Institute fitness coachAt 10 years of age, skinny and self-conscious, a relative loaned me a barbell set to see if "I could put some meat on my puny body." Thus, I began to study exercise and its effect on human functional ability. My hobby became my life quest, causing me to move to seven states in the U.S., seeking the Holy Grail of Wellness, and it guided me to develop the concept of maximum fitness in minimum time, and to also compare the benefits free weight training compared to High-Tech exercise.

Eventually, I owned a number of wellness centers that allowed me to conduct numerous research projects, which produced strength and fitness results never before thought possible. You will experience improvements in strength, flexibility, muscle endurance, and cardio endurance, when exercising as little as twice a week, or get your money back.

As a freshman in high school, I weighed under 100 lbs. I was not happy with the way I looked or felt, so I began training with free weights. At 15 years of age, I was competing in Olympic Lifting as a member of the Scranton, Pennsylvania YMCA weight lifting team.

After high school, I entered the United States Air Force and won several Western Massachusetts Olympic lifting titles. I received an honorable discharge in 1958. By then, I had gained a total of 60 pounds of solid muscle, and was in control of my weight management.

Then, I was fortunate to meet a person who became a my mentor for 30 years, Ed Jubinville. Ed, known throughout the world, was the founder of many physique and strong man contests, at the famous Mountain Park in Holyoke, MA. These contests are featured in the movie Pumping Iron and numerous books. For years, I was a chief judge at Mountain Park, and other locations, as well as a competitor. I was awarded the titles: "New England's Strongest Man," "East Coast's Strongest Man," and "New England Arm Wrestling Champion." My self-esteem and self-reliance dramatically increased beyond anything I ever imagined.

The physique and weight-lifting contests at Mt. Park attracted the best in the bodybuilding world, some as competitors and some as guest posers. I remember seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigino, Mike Mentzer, Ray Mentzer, Dave Mastorakis, Franco Columbo, Frank Zane, Mike Katz, Gene Massey, Dave Draper, Freddy Ortiz, Ed Giuliani, Leon Brown, Harold Poole, Len Archambault, and scores of the strongest and best-built men and women from the East Coast and beyond.

In the 1970's, I established the first of what grew to become nine Nautilus and MedX High Tech fitness, physical therapy, and work conditioning centers in New England, Florida and California. These centers formed the base of our scientific, fitness research for women, men, and young adults.

In 1980, I accepted a staff position at Nautilus Sports\Medical Industries and The Nautilus Television Network in DeLand, Florida, and eventually held the position of Regional Director of Northern California for MedX West. This enabled me to create research protocols, and to advance physical therapy exercise techniques, and work conditioning procedures. I named the exercise system "Fitness Therapy." This approach was featured in the National Fitness Trade Journal in 1995.

Addicted by the health and fitness world, I began writing for National magazines, among them: California Chiropractic, Fitness Management, Iron Man Magazine, Muscle Training Illustrated, Nautilus Magazine, American Bodybuilder, Pump, and others.

It is with great happiness that I share my knowledge and experience with you!
